Four Horsemen

D J Grothe, associate editor of Free Inquiry magazine, and a program director of Center for Inquiry, coined a phrase recently in his Point of Inquiry interview with Christopher Hitchens; he called the atheist quartet, Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens, the ‘four horsemen of the counter-apocalypse’.

And I’m more than a little inclined to agree with him (as anyone who reads the blog will have no trouble comprehending). So I find myself writing this page with the express purpose of linking to anything I can find of the Four Horsemen; plus links to the stupidity and ignorance that they are leading the revolution against.

A recent article named Carl Sagan as the fourth horseman of the anti-religious apocalypse, since Hitchens seems to have taken up the fourth seat and Sagan died in 1996, he’s here instead, but if I find enough links for Sagan’s articles, then I’ll add him. Watch that space!

FOUR HORSEMEN

Michael Shermer’s Open Letter

richard dawkins

The World of Dawkins; a site much liked and oft forgot with the creation of Richard Dawkins.net.

daniel dennet

Daniel Dennett; philosopher and author joined the Horsemen with his book, Breaking the Spell.

sam harris

Sam Harris, a philosophy graduate, led the charge with The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation.

christopher hitchens

Christopher Hitchens, well used to the public eye as a writer in many papers and journals, and a homegrown local to someone like myself, joined his predecessors on horseback with God Is Not Great.

THE OPPOSITION

Michael Behe and his irreducibly complex essay (I cannot find an online version) plus a rejoinder; which has been recently thrown over by Behe himself for The Edge of Evolution and here’s Richard Dawkins response to it (it’s a second-hand article, you’ll need to sign in to the NY Times for the original).
The Discovery Institute; and a rather clownish take on it. Despite the crudity, it’s not off target.
Chick Tracts ~ to be honest, this guy’s fairly sick with some of his comics, plus irrational and he peddles in outright lies.
The Christian Coalition ~ “America’s leading grassroots organisation defending our godly heritage”; says it all really.

THE ALLIES

Miller & Levine ~ Ken Miller is a biologist at the university of Colorado and has written more than a few replies to creationist arguments.
National Centre for Science Education ~ A not-for-profit organisation in America for parents, schools and citizens who want to keep evolution in public schools.
Richard Dawkins Social Network ~ Rather like facebook, blogspot or myspace but for (mainly) secularists and atheists.
The Rationalist Webring ~ A webring of rationalist websites.
National Secular Society ~ A British organisation fighting to keep religion in the personal and out of the public arena.
Edge ~ Online outlet for the third culture.
Atheist Nexus ~ Online social networking for atheists, another one like Facebook and proving rather popular! So popular in fact that they’re looking for donations to keep going.

THE INSANE

Atheism equals Autism and a Reply.
Melanie Phillips claims alternative therapy is mad, but not faith in God.

THE OTHERS

Theo Hobson ~ some of his articles would drive you mad, like the one about Adam and Eve’s sex life being spiritually fulfilling, just so long as you accept your sex life sucks by comparison, and the one about secular morality being unable to cope with the inner struggle that every person faces (sorry Theo, I found my inner peace in an atheistic life, and my outer paradise lies in a secular one, I didn’t need faith to come to terms with myself ~ LDK). Yet he writes about the privileged power of the Church being misused in education and opposes the childish objections of creationists to scientific truths. One worth reading, you’ll alternately rant and agree with him.
