Good news about the job prospects.

If you don’t want to be seen as job-hopping, of course you can tell them you’ve taken something temporary and irrelevant, just to keep body & soul together.

Remember to call your friends in the industry, too, and see if they have heard of anything.

My site is a little neglected these days as I’m trying to get my marbles organized in Real Life.

Monado: I will be ringing them this week sometime, but you make a good point about how to approach them, I’ll bear it in mind.

The trouble with getting a part-time job before another lab job is the impression you’re giving that you’re jumping between jobs rather than staying on a single career path. It’s pretty much frowned upon, but it’s still a consideration depending on what happens within the next few months. Mind you, I’m looking into volunteering in an appropriate sector.

The good news is I had six jobs tagged to apply for within an hour of receiving the letter, so fingers crossed!

Thanks for the advice, I dropped in on your site. I’ll be going back for a longer read later

You call them up but don’t say “What did I do wrong?” If you simply haven’t heard back from them, say, “Is there anything else that you would like to know, that might have been skipped in the interview?” If they definitely don’t want you, then phrase the question in some positive way, “Was there something that you were looking for?” or “Is there some qualification or quality that you are looking for, which I might try to develop in case you have another opening in the future?”

If you’re really going crazy, please consider getting a job, something part-time or unimportant that will at least keep you getting up in the morning and moving and maybe even meeting people. It will bring in a little money, give some structure to your days, and if you get an interview, you can schedule it around your current obligations, which makes you busy and perhaps in demand.

Is there someone with whom you can role-play interviews until you feel calmer? If not, try to go in regarding them as practice for the next interview.
